Open Source Events Roundup
This week [Apr 9-13/2007] is a happening week for Bengalooru FOSS enthusiasts.
1. OpenMoko event on 7th. The event seems to have generated a lot of interest already with all the available 100 seats taken. Herald Welte and Sean Moss-Pultz of OpenMoko project will be speaking. I plan to attend this, even if just get the FOSS community buzz around my ears :)
The second event is a students' event at MSRIT, with quite a few interesting topics there. Andrew Cowie is talking on "Your role in the future landscape of FOSS" to the students. With Microsoftisation of Indian Engineering education, talks like this are the need of the hour.
I attended one of Cowie's talks in Linux-Bangalore. He is quite an enthusiastic speaker. I hope he gets to influence the students to take up FOSS.
There is also a student talk on WEKA, the machine learning toolkit, which I'm quite fond of, in a way. My friend Swaroop is talking about VIM plugins.
I have given talks and workshops on Opensource(mostly python related) in tech environments. But, now I feel that the Open source needs to be spoken about more to non-technical environments too. Like Managment schools, perhaps. I know it will take a long time to dislodge Excel from MBA's hands. But, raising awareness about alternate reporting tools, statistical tools, analysis tools may be a good start.
Update: Details about the MSRIT event added.
